Online creative writing summer camp for your middle school learners is fun, interactive, and taught by a published author – me!

I will be teaching a 5-day Online Creative Writing Summer Camp for ages 10-14 for just $8 per session for 5 sessions on Outschool. If you haven’t heard of Outschool before, it’s an education platform that offers online classes for kids ages 3-18 with over 900,000 learners in 174 countries worldwide. Outschool classes are small, so your writer can get more individualized instruction.

You can also receive $8 off the total cost of the camp with this coupon code: HARSCPM9Z18

Your middle school writer will learn the 5 proven writing strategies to help them break through writer’s block to draft a short story.

Writers will learn how to use a different writing strategy to break through writer’s block and use those strategies to write a story.

How This Online Writing Summer Camp is Structured

Each day in this camp, writers will be interacting with each other and me to:

  1. Define a particular writing strategy – through discussion and sharing
  2. Learn through guided practice how to use that strategy to create specific details for their story
  3. Organize their details before writing
  4. Share some of our ideas with each other
  5. Write a part of their short story using their new ideas
  6. Receive individualized feedback from me –  through our online classroom throughout camp and after camp up to 30 days.

The Creative Writing Strategies Writers Will Learn:

Day 1:

Asking Questions and Brain dumping to get at their story concept and starting their draft

Day 2:

Mind Mapping to help them describe characters and setting and writing more of their draft.

Day 3:

Drawing to Write to help them describe a specific place in their story and adding their ideas to their draft.

Day 4:

Timeline of Events in their story and adding those events to their draft.

Day 5:

Writing sprint (based on their timeline) to write the draft of their story and continue using the strategies to continue their draft.

After Camp Concludes:

Writers can submit their writings to me for feedback for up to 30 days from the last day of camp inside the Section Classroom.

Students will need the following materials for this Online Creative Writing Summer Camp:

  1. notebook paper or a writing journal (a spiral notebook is perfect)
  2. pen or pencil (their writing preference)
  3. highlighter, which is optional
  4. Google doc or other app open if they want to type their stories during writing time.

Online Creative Writing Camp –  Teaching Style

During this online creative writing summer camp, I will ask questions, encourage writers to share, demonstrate step-by-step how to complete each strategy, allow students time to use the strategy with chosen or assigned topics, and share our ideas as we go. Then, we will organize and write for to ten to fifteen minutes, depending on time.

All sharing is optional. If a writer wants to just listen to others, this is okay. I will still ask your writer if they want to share throughout the lesson. Of course, if they feel comfortable with us, they can share.

Additionally, writers can turn in their writing to me on the online creative writing summer camp classroom page and get feedback for their writing for up to 30 days after our last class ends. (This is because Outschool closes the classroom conversations after 30 days). However, parents can still reach me through the conversations tab if they have previously communicated with me if they need further assistance or would like to discuss their learner.

About the Teacher:

Hey there! My name is Kathie, and I am an Outschool Creative Writing teacher. I teach the writing strategies and techniques that help middle school writers to take their writing skills from good to fantastic. Classes I offer will be focused on Creative Writing, ELA tutoring for ages 10-14, and Canva digital design for grades 6th -8th grades (ages 10-14).

I often combine my writing classes with tutorials for Canva, so students have a beautiful final writing piece when they are finished.

(For this online creative writing summer camp, I will not be using Canva because we would need a lot more time.)

After graduating from University of South Florida in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing, I worked for USF for several years and decided to become a Language Arts teacher. In 1996, I became an English Language Arts teacher for middle school students grades 6-8. I took post graduate credits for my education certification from USF. I’ve been teaching for the last 26 years in Florida.

I am also the published author of a teen series, Children of the Psi Books 1 and 2 as well as a collection of Halloween stories. Encouraging my students to publish their writing is a passion of mine as well.
