Often, students do not see what they have scored on an essay or writing assignment until weeks after the assignment is completed. Subsequently, this leads to confusion and apathy when students receive their graded essays because the subject matter of the class has already moved on in most cases.

In order to support my tutoring students, I teach them thinking and brainstorming skills first. Then, they write in a shared document with me. This allows me to see where they get stuck with their writing, if they are making grammar mistakes repeatedly, or they need to vary their sentence structure.
Additionally, I have students revise at least one or two areas of their writing every session – such as changing simple words to higher level vocabulary words or using transition words to help their organization.
This type of writing support over a school year contributes not only to the growth children’s writing skills, it also builds confidence in themselves.
