Being an author of five YA books – the Children of the Psi series and several collections of Halloween Stories – gives me lots of street cred with my creative writing and ELA students.
My Books
The first two books here are part of the Children of the Psi series. I am currently working on Book 3, which I wrote with my students during National Novel Writing Month this school year. It is in the revision stage right now. The last book is the Halloween stories that I have written with them every year since 2005.
It all started when I taught kids who were labelled potential “dropouts.”
I taught on a special team of these kids who often struggled with motivation. So, that year I decided to decorate my classroom like a haunted house, put on spooky mood music from the Spirit Halloween store and put two sheets of paper and a pencil on every desk. I wrote along with them. After the initial scariness, my students got right down to penning their own horror stories. They worked hard for two weeks revising their stories. Since then, I have done this every year with my students. It’s my favorite lesson of the year, and a huge hit with my middle school students.
